The Acer Aspire S7-393-7451 is ultraportable for travelling, being slim and lightweight, a downside is that it is preinstalled with quite a lot of software, and the amount of ports on the laptop are limited.

The Acer Aspire S7-393-7451 has a distinctive design with a slim and sleek profile so is a perfect companion for travelling, it is a thin and totally portable high end laptop that has a sleek design with Gorilla glass lid and aluminium unibody chassis.

Design

The design of the Acer Aspire S7-393-7451 is very similar to the Aspire S7 which came out back in 2012 and there aren’t many changes as it is still very slim, has the same Gorilla Glass covered lid and aluminium unibody chassis, and is still very lightweight, only weighing 2.87 pounds. It measures a very sleek 0.51 by 12.7 by 8.8 inches which is slimmer than most of its competitors, the aluminium design makes it look stylish and is also robust but still light weight.

Display and audio

The laptop has a 13.3 full HD touch screen, and even though it is touch screen which can add to the thickness, it still remains very thin and the screen has a good quality of colour, fantastic brightness and sharpness, which you can see almost any angle, as the display has an in-plane Switching panel (IPS)

The Laptop can be opened into a flat position, so if you are sharing the display with other people the screen can open up right down to a 180 degree angle, and the hinges have increased tension which makes it easy to open but at the same time, holds the screen steady creating less wobbling.

The speakers are very good having Dolby audio enhancements which produce a decent amount of volume which is clear and powerful enough to fill a room and impressive for a laptop of this type, but saying that, when on higher volumes can cause just a slight buzzing sound.

Keyboard

The keyboard is very thin, and the keys are well spaced out, they are very responsive and even when not pressed right in the middle, they still register the clicks and are quite sturdy and don’t feel flimsy at all, they have a silver metallic finish which are backlit, and this will help you use this laptop even if it is in darker conditions. The really great thing is that the backlighting on the keys will actually adjust according to how much light there is. If you want to manually control this you can do so by tweaking it yourself with the settings and you can also turn it fully on all the time or turn it completely off.

There is an issue with this however, sometimes with the Aspire S7, as it has a silver finish on the keys you can find that when the backlight is really bright it can make the lettering nearly disappear – again this is only a small niggle but worth mentioning.

Features

One of the bugbears a lot of people have with the Acer Aspire S7 is that it only has a few ports. Of course you will get wireless connectivity and it is fitted with dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 as well as Intel WiDi for wireless media streaming.

In terms of storage you will get a 256GB solid state drive which is more as less standard for these type of laptops called ultra-books. This is not a lot of room however and if you are working with large media files it will quickly fill up.

For most people that are using the Aspire S7 on the move and not doing anything too space intensive it will be fine though.

PROS:
  • Full HD touch screen
  • Intel Core i7-5500U processor
  • Ultraportable, lightweight design
  • Gorilla Glass lid

CONS:
  • Comes with a lot of preinstalled software
  • Not many ports
  • Battery life could be longer

Software and warranty

We mentioned above about all of the pre-installed software you get and you will find several apps that on the start screen, and loads of utilities on the desktop. Some will give you free trials and you will be able to get a 30 day trial of McAfee LiveSafe Security, Office 365 will give you a 30 day trial as well.

You will also get more software and these include CyberLink Media Suite, Foxit Phantom PDF and Nuance Dragon Assistant you will also get paid services such as Netflix, HuluPlus and the standard shopping apps like Amazon and Ebay.

On top of all of that you will get abApps and this app will allow you to stream your own music or you will be able to edit documents store on your PC.

All of this software is not a bad thing at all but some people may find it a little too much – but of course you can delete them off – they only come pre-installed so no real problem there.

Performance

The Acer Aspire S7 main selling point is that it is an Ultrabook you will be able to take this anywhere and use it and as it is so light it can take away a little bit in terms of power. However with the Aspire S7 we think you will be pleasantly surprised.

If you compare this to another Ultrabook such as the Apple MacBook in terms of performance you will find that the Aspire S7 wins hands down. This is all down to the Intel Core M CPU in the MacBook so in terms of processing speed you will love the S7.

This Ultrabook also does really well when running multimedia and it is one of the market leaders in terms of number crunching if you are using memory hogging video.

If you are going to use this to watch and work with a lot of videos and photos you will love it – it is VERY fast and is definitely one of the market leaders.

Battery Life:

Not so good but not horrible either. You will find that the Aspire S7 battery will last around 6 hours and 20 minutes and you will find that the MacBook gives you almost double battery time. In fact, it is the shortest battery time out of its competitors but this needn’t put you off if you are not going to use for longer than 6 hours at a time.

Conclusion

The Acer Aspire S7 is a stunner. If you are looking for a very fast ultra book and you want it as light and slim as it can possible be then you will love this. It has a very good design, stylish and the design of the Gorilla Glass covered lid will blow you away – when you couple that with decent performance you have a very awesome Ultrabook.

The only drawbacks are a limited selection of ports, a shorter battery life and a lot of software preinstalled you might want to sort through. This one is definitely one for the shortlist though.
